I have had for about 2 months now, really sore split lips.  If I yawn or try and take a big bite (I have a small mouth) – then almost every time, it will split in the corners.  I am also having some scabby like sores – from what I’ve read, it doesn’t sound like the “herpes cold sore” – but annoying nonetheless.  I put lemon balm tincture in a roller bottle and have used it for about a month – no improvement.  I tried aloe vera in a roller – no improvement.  I’ve tried comfrey oil in a roller – no improvement.  I give up trying to figure it out myself – I need someone smarter than me to help me figure out what to do here.  It hurts to eat, smile, kiss hubby, or yawn!

The alcohol in the tincture may be contributing to the dryness.  Make your tincture into a salve, with oil and wax (bees wax or candelilla are both great), ditch the roller bottle, and put it into either a little salve jar, or a lip balm “thingy.”  I’d bet dollars to donuts that solves the problem.

Thanks Michelle and I would totally do a face palm head slap and say aha! except for the fact that I’ve quit the lemon balm tincture and gone now to only aloe or the comfrey oil – neither are drying.  However, that said, I do believe that when I was using the tincture that it was worse than it is now, so on that point I believe you are totally correct!  🙂  The lips are a bit better than they were a couple of weeks ago – so hopefully the future will be better for the lips (especially if I can find the “right” thing to use).  Thanks again for your great insight.

Just a thought… try putting pure lanolin ointment (NOT CREAM) on you lips pretty thick before bedtime. You will see amazing improvement then next morning -look at Walmart for “Parents Choice Lanolin BALM” it’ll be in the baby section as it’s commonly used by breastfeeding mothers for cracked nipples.

Thanks Jennifer – I’ll put that on my “next time” list (we’re 45 minutes away from a Walmart).  I never knew about that stuff (no kids).  Sounds like a handy thing to have on hand!

Jennifer, after looking into Lanolin – it looks like it would be a great help for “all of me” as we are in a VERY dry climate and the humidity in the house is generally around 16%!  So some good natural moisturizing sounds like just the ticket.  Thanks much!

What about beeswax mixed with olive oil? I made a simple diaper balm and added coconut oil, too. Works great and is very thick. I bet it would work as a thick moisturizer for your lips, too.

Thanks Megan – I don’t seem to absorb coconut oil at all, and very slow to absorb olive oil – so in this instance, those might be good for my lips :-). Thanks for the idea.

                        Are you drinking enough water?

Are you getting enough Omega fatty acids?

Go to the Medicine Making lesson on lotions. The lotion I show you how to make there is really great for grumpy skin (Marshmallow, Calendula, Comfrey)

I’m close on the water requirements, but a bit short.  I should have around 75 ounces, and get about 64 ounces a day.  Probably not enough Omega 3 – I’ll look into that.  One would think that Comfrey infused oil would be a great thing for them – healing them right up, but sadly, no.  I’ll look into the lotion.  You said grumpy skin, but what about lips – I’ll basically be eating anything I put on them…  This is very frustrating 🙁

Lips are made of skin. The lotion won’t be any yuckier than other lip products.
