Occasionally I see Doc mention a plant that I’m not used to, since I grew up in Florida and now live in Arkansas. Hardly dry or high mountain areas.

But that plant wouldn’t be happy here. So unless I purchase it, I’ll leave it out of my apothecary stash.

I suspect there are southeastern plants that are not something he normally mentions but that would be great to grow and use – IF I knew what they are.

So off the tops of your heads, O Hive Mind, can you name me some plants that would be wildcrafted and/or grown in the south east that are common enough here but maybe not something you find out west?

Something all the eastern herbalists know but I don’t? Things that Doc leaves out cuz they’re just not gonna do well out west?

Example: passiflora grows in my back yard uninvited. I didn’t realize how cool that is for a long time.

I know I’m not the only non-western US person on the Forum…….

        Thanks.

I would start by doing a YouTube or internet search on southern medicinal herbs.

As the geography of the school’s students expands, I’m seeing the need to include more Eastern species in the lessons.

The important thing is to understand the actions of the plants. If you understand what an antispasmodic does you can use a number of antispasmodics to fill that niche in the formula. If you live in the East, use Black Haw. If you live in the Southwest, use Lobelia cardinalis.

When the modules are all finished, I plan to go back through them and do some re-writes including more Eastern species so that the earlier modules will be more similar to the more recent ones.

              Thanks, Doc and Steve. :notworthy:

I took Steve’s advice and I’ve been combing the web for southern plants. What an intriguing journey.

I’ve found some interesting videos on southern plants/herbs on another herbalist site, but out of respect, I didn’t post them here.

I don’t have a problem with you sharing other people’s work. We do it quite often. All I ask is you don’t SWAMP us with any one sites work. A link to the other site’s article in the appropriate forum section would be even more respectful.
