StudentDoc – I’ve recently read of Spagyric Method (or Spagyric Tinctures) – in the case I was reading about – it was about Lion’s Mane tincture. Apparently this is a process of burning everything after the alcohol extraction is done, then adding in the white ash to the tincture to capture the minerals. I have searched, but didn’t find anything in the school here about this, so I wanted to reach out to see what your thoughts are on this – hype, factual, valid and useful, or pure poppycock. Thanks!

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorThere is a lot of needless complication of herbal medicine making. Spagyric Tinctures are a prime example. They macerate for 40 days or so. Then dry strain it and dry and burn the leftover herbs and then add the ash to the tincture and macerate another 40 days.
Minerals are good for you, no doubt. But if you want plant minerals in your diet, eat plants. Secondly, macerating for 40 days to get the minerals back into the tincture is silly. Anything alcohol soluble has already been dissolved. Anything not alcohol soluble will never be dissolved. It’ll just settle to the bottom of the bottle. So, you could shake the bottle and get those minerals I guess but macerating for another month and a half is absurd.
If one wants plant minerals or vitamins, eat the plants or put the dry plants in your morning smoothie. Some vitamins and minerals will extract well with tincturing. Many won’t Tincturing isn’t the tool for dietary requirements.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentTopic AuthorThanks Doc – that was more or less my opinion, but saw some online and they acted like it was the best thing since sliced bread (not that bread is good for us by any means)…

StudentGlad this question was asked, and relieved for the answer. Life is hard enough without making it more complicated.
