My husband is having knee surgery this next week… What herbs would be good for him to take prior to surgery and then after surgery?

We could use some more information. Since herbs can have an interaction with pharmaceuticals we need to know what he may be currently taking and what he may be required to take as well.

It would also be nice to know what surgery he is going to be having.

Does he have any allergies that are known, drug or food.

Any other physical conditions or symptoms?

He is having some cartilage repair work done. I don’t know the technical terms… There is a tear below his knee cap…. He is taking histamine (docs formula) and symbicort… He doesn’t have any heart issues and not on blood thinners…. He is using comfrey/arnica infusion as a surface spray for his knee right now.. He will probably be prescribed pain meds and maybe and antibiotic. He would like to try herbal pain meds and antibiotics instead.

arthroscopic surgery is what I believe you are referring to.

Our Bone/Tissue/Cartilage would be suggested for after the surgery to help with repair and healing.

I will let Doc address the pain issue.

Do not take any herbs for a week or two before surgery.

Many herbs can interact with pharmaceuticals, interfere with or potentiate anesthetics or prolong bleeding times.

Afterward, Echinacea would be good to encourage cartilage healing and fight infection.

Steven’s recommendations above would be good as well.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
