New student here, so be gentle with me!  We live in a “high altitude desert” with a very short growing season.  Add to that – we have loads of hungry pesky deer and rabbits, and are not allowed by our HOA to fence in a large area – anything and everything not fenced will be eaten or destroyed.  I have a very small area that we were allowed to fence in and “stuff” with raised beds for old back relief.  So, now to the actual question.  This area has a “whopping” 155 square feet of available growing area which we will be putting drip irrigation on.  Given the tiny amount of growing space, what are your thoughts on the MOST important herbs to grow and WHY?  In other words, I need the best medicinal bang for my buck – space wise!  Thanks in advance. Sharon

          Hi Sharon,

That’s a question I get a lot. I’m never sure how to answer it because what folks need varies so wildly. What I’d do is have a look at The HomeGrown Herbalist as a starting place for herbs to consider. All of the herbs in that book are quite good and are easy to grow. Have a look and see which ones look good for your needs.

Will the HOA let you put in a green house? Maybe that could be a way to get around their rules.

Also, deer can make tasty sandwiches if you put some good herbs on them. And, as you said, about any herb you plant can make a nice sandwich meat attractant. :0)

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

You are so funny – I can tell I am going to LOVE this class!  No greenhouse is allowed sadly, thus the “micro-garden”!  I hear ya about the deer attractants – my hubby has named our wild rabbits “stew”!  We aren’t allowed to kill the deer though, so there goes that (at least in the subdivision – elsewhere yes).  It didn’t hurt to ask about what herbs might be the best for us though…  Will the book have different information than I will get in the class?

Everything that’s in the books can be found in the school. They’re just quick, handy and portable.

I have come to realize I need the Giant Turkish Broad Leaf Plantain, but I can only grow ONE plant in my tiny space, so I need like 3-4 seeds (so I can make sure I actually get one to grow).  If anyone knows where I can get just a teeny amount of seeds (for a teeny garden), I would be very grateful!
