Everything is in bloom but I’m just getting started on my herbalism journey and feeling pressed for time/information on a select few herbs in the central Texas area while they’re fresh and blooming!

Anyone from Texas, particularly the central Texas hill country, have any favorite herbal resource books they like on herbs near us?

I’m looking to go forage some agarita soon, oh how sweet the flowers smell!

In general I am very interested in using native substitutes for other common herbs, such as how agarita can be used similarly to goldenseal.

I was looking at this book by Nicole Telkes but it has mixed reviews… and is $50. It sounds super niche and the author is from Austin, though, which is kind of what I’m looking for. Anyone have this one and like it?

Hello, fellow Texan named Rebecca! šŸ˜€

I don’t have the book you’re asking about, so I can’t speak to its usefulness or lack thereof. šŸ™‚

Besides Doc’s books (I have both the Guide to Medicinal Weeds and HGH; some of the plants grow in my area and some do not), I have Charles W. Kane’sĀ Wild Edible Plants of Texas, which is very good. For each plant listed, it has a blotch map of Texas showing where the plant grows; also Latin name and other common names, and medicinal uses if there are any. (And more besides.) I’ve only had occasion to use it once or twice so far, but I like it and would recommend!

There’s another book on foraging that I like but don’t own–I can’t remember the name of it at the moment, but if I do, I’ll let you know!

          Best wishes on your foraging!
