Hello all, a friend of mine got their blood work back, and they thyroid levels are high. They have never been that way before. What could I tell her to look at?

Hi Jerry, Do you mean that her thyroid is making too much of the thyroid hormone and is in a hyper state (hyperthyroidism) or do you mean her TSH levels are high which typically indicates an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)?

Sorry I don’t know what that means. The results said:

                T4 (Total) (Thyroid) 11.78  A 5.1 – 10.1 (ug/dL)

stating that the levels were 11.78, and normal is between 5.1-10.1

Jerry, in my experience, this could indicate that a person has an overactive thyroid (where the thyroid is producing too much of the hormone) OR maybe Thyroiditis, where there is thyroid inflammation.  I have seen it with one client who was taking specific medications. I am sure that other things could cause this but these are the only conditions I have worked with personally.  For the overactive thyroid, you might look at Lemon Balm, Rosemary, and Bladderwrack. Hyperthyroidism sometimes is too much iodine in which case the Blddrwrack might not be a good herb to use. If the person is on any medication you might look deeply into those.  I hope that this helps with some things to start with.

What did her doctor say about it? Did they do a TSH level? That’s a pretty mild elevation. If the doctor isn’t worried (based on  other testing, exam etc…) it may not be an issue. Herbs like bugleweed, motherwort and lemon balm can lower thyroid levels. There’s a recipe for a formula called Thyroid Calm (not one that I sell) on this page:

                  Endocrine Formulas

Any of those herbs would do the job. Lemon balm tastes best. But, I’d have her follow up with her doctor to make sure the herbs don’t interfere with anything he/she’ doing.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Jerry, I have hypothyroidism, and my doctor test free T3, reverse T3, Free T4, Thyroid stimulating Hormone . it takes all of these to get a true level. ( I have read) Check out these two book. The Iodine Connection by David Brownstein MD, and Thyroid Healthy by Suzy Cohen RPh. She list all of the test and level. My hormone Doctor said when checking all the hormones, he looks at all of them and what I am feeling to know where I am at, like low normal, or high normal etc. Hope this helps you.

Doc, I have a big question, when I went to my hormone doctor and showed him the thyroid stim formula and asked him if it would be ok to take this? He looked over them and said,” I know most of them and they are good. Yes go ahead, ‘ I said, instead of the my regular thyroid medication? He said no just take them together. Now I am getting rapid heart rate, dizzy like I am going to pass out. I called and left him a message today, and I did not take the thyroid stim today. I have not heard from him yet. This evening the symptoms started again. I am trying to figure out what is causing this symptom. My BP has always been normal.  Should thyroid stim be taken in place of prescription med? That is what I was going for. Thanks for the feed back, it will help do a process of limitation.
