Before I started taking Doc Jones classes, I tried learning about herbs through books and internet.  I tried to make  tinctures using the powder form of Black Cohosh, Ashwagandha, and Comfrey.  I was only able to remove a small amount of tincture while the rest was just wet powder.  Are you not supposed to tincture some or all powdered herbs?

Hi Judy.  I ran into the same problem when I started tincturing powdered herbs.  I purchased a set of muslin pouches, and a potato ricer.  Once I’ve strained all the tincture out of the herb, I put the rest in one of the pouches, put it in the ricer, and am able to press quite a bit more from that!

          Hope this helps..

The potato ricer is such a great idea, thanks Chris!

So I recently made a healing balm and used the potato ricer to get all the last bits of liquid out of the powder and it worked so well! Thanks again for that tip!

Chris, how do you wash the muslin pouches, or do you?

Hi Lisa.  After emptying the bag I turn it inside out and rinse thoroughly until all the herb has been rinsed out, and then hang to dry. Since all of my tinctures are made using a minstruum of at least 40% alcohol, I don’t use any type of soap to wash them.  -Chris

I have just strained 18 tinctures using powder. I poured as much out of jar as I could before the powder came out. I put a small hole strainer over a large glass bowl lined with a piece of muslin cloth. I then put the wet powder in cloth twist the top together a time or two and squeeze as much out as I can. I made mine in quart jars and averaged about another 3/4 cup of tincture.
