I want to mix a few different herbs and make a glycerin tincture. Some of the herbs need a 5:1 ratio, some 8:1 etc. My plan is to mix the dry herb together in the quantity I want to tincture, then add the pre-mixed herbs to the menstruum, and use the most concentrated ratio, which in this case would be 5:1. Is that a good way to make the best, most concentrated tincture?

I am concerned because as part of a blend, that actually makes the ratio of each specific herb less than it would be if it was the only herb being tinctured (less potent?), but if I figured the ratio of each herb individually, thats a lot of herb for the menstruum, too much I think!

          That’s how I’d do it.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

What is a menstruum? I can guess that it’s the combination of herbs being tinctured in the glycerin, but where does that word come from and why use it here?

Menstruum is the funky herbalist word for the liquid used in making a tincture. It could be alcohol, glycerine, vinegar etc… The Mark, is the funky herbalist word for the herbs that are used.

I don’t know why herbalists like using funky words. I’d guess it’s because they’re a little funky.
