StudentHello! New from Indiana.
I’m wondering if there is anything that can be used to encourage cartilage regeneration/healing for a torn meniscus.
Thanks for any input!

StudentHey Sue,
I just heard in one of the lectures that echinacea helps to rebuild tissue. Also, comfrey is what we use around her for stuff like that. One of my dogs tore a ligament in her leg. The vet said she had to heal in 2 weeks but expected it wouldn’t heal quickly and we’d have to do surgery. I used comfrey and it healed up fine!

StudentTopic AuthorHow did you use comfrey… I have a comfrey salve that I’ve used but suspect that it is not strong enough.
Did you do a poltice? If so, how did you make and apply?

StudentI’ve done it a couple different ways. We made a salve and had good success with that (just as long as the salve is pretty potent and not older than like a year). I’ve also just massaged in infused comfrey oil (that’s how I treated my long-haired dog). And we’ve done a fresh comfrey leaf poultice by simply blending up fresh leaves and water and applying the thick slurry.

StudentTopic AuthorI know that ligaments are quite different from cartilage. In the medical world they used to believe that there wasn’t enough circulation in cartilage for them to heal though there is some updated information that may contradict that.
With that in mind, it appears that stimulating circulation would be a good target for healing. I wonder if comfrey can accomplish that.

StudentTrue. I think the active ingredient in comfrey is allantoin which speeds cell division. I kind of thought that it could speed cell division no matter if it was ligament tissue or cartilage. But I might be wrong. I just know I’ve had such great success with comfrey with all kinds of wounds, sprains, back pain, etc. I think for improving circulation, you might find other herbs to be more targeted for that. Maybe like an antispasmodic to allow the vessels to open up. And maybe cayenne.

Homestead InstructorElena is on the right track with Echinacea and comfrey. Comfrey tincture topically would be the fastest way to get it to the target. Echinacea internally to help rebuild connective tissue too.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
