        Hi All,

I am looking for any and all suggestions to help the nephew of a very good friend. Here is the story. 43 year old male. 6’2″ tall 220 lbs, very muscular low body fat, very active life style.  Many years of acid reflux and taking all types of OTC remedies daily. High stress, many bouts of throwing up on a regular basis. This has all come to a head resulting in a stricture of the esophagus and having it stretched with little success. Next a hiatal hernia surgery that ended up bleeding internally due to a bout of vomiting which caused him to be rushed back to hospital. Only type of surgeon who would agree to treat him was bariatric. Not quite sure of all the details here but from what I gathered the bariatric surgeon opened him up from sternum to navel and said he had to pull up the stomach and basically anchor it back in place. Acid has caused ulcers in esophagus and the stricture area is now to fragile to stretch again. Immediately after the surgery the doctor told him he had never seen anything like his case before and that he had done “all I could to help.” Patient was asked to wait six months to be reevaluated. In the meantime food constantly lodges in the esophagus and will not go down. He eventually has to cough it up. Liquids also get stuck. Patient has lost 50 pounds over the last two months. Doc I would truly appreciate any insights, suggestions you may have. Patient is located in Tyler, Texas. Is there a good naturopath in the area anyone could recommend? He is willing to travel. This is a young father (twin 10 year old girls) who is at this point basically starving to death.

Kim, his condition sounds truly horrible.  My sister in law had a similar situation labelled as gastroparesis.  We had good conversations about her situation and two points really stood out.  First was her high-stress personality and possible vagus nerve disregulation so she couldn’t engage “rest and digest mode.”  Second was how acid reflux can be a sign of LOW stomach acid that is not allowing the stomach to empty.  Further lowering the acid with medication can initiate a very negative cycle.  Several people in my spouse’s family have managed acid issues with an opposite approach.  She is much better these days.

Symptom-wise maybe relax the esophagus instead of stretching it.  Doc has a story of using cramp bark to relax the esophagus when his daughter was choking.  A friend’s mother was experiencing very painful swallowing after lung cancer treatment, and a cramp bark, lobelia, licorice throat spray gave her great relief.  As for the ulcers and immediate nutrition needs, I can’t recall if this is from Doc or another herb source, but there was a case with serious food allergies and the person ate slippery elm porridge to heal during the initial stages of recovery.

My prayers for your friend’s nephew, Dee

Thanks so much Dee. Great suggestions which I will pass along. I will see if I can find more information on the slippery elm porridge. Getting nutrition into his body is paramount at this point. Again, thank you for your note.

You’re welcome, Kim – Found the reference to slippery elm porridge!  Lower Digestive System part 3 The Plants, page 88 on slippery elm.

Follow up. Does anyone know of a DO or other professional who is familiar with both herbs and pharmacology in the Tyler Texas region? Really trying to get my friend’s nephew some much needed help.  Thanks

Kim, you might call Doc Jone’s office to see if they can make any recommendations.  I think often Doc just has too many irons in the fire, and cannot get to the forums to go thru the MANY questions and needs.  He always says if something is really important to connect directly.  I think this qualifies!  Oh, by the way, I’m part of a global prayer group, and I have several times put this out there for everyone to pray for.

Thank you Sharon. Do you know what number I should call?

                          Hi Kim,

I just saw this post. The Digestive Support Formula may help soothe things, heal the ulcers etc… but because this is a “mechanical problem” herbs aren’t going to change the scar tissue and strictures.

I’d Call Dr. Jed Adamson. He’s a colleague of mine an a brilliant naturopath here in Idaho. He does a lot of modalities that might be good compliments to the herbs. He may also know someone closer to you that could help.
