StudentHow do we go about transitioning to natural healing methods if one is on a prescription?  For instance, if someone is taking insulin as a preventative (refused metformin and doc ordered insulin shots…not dx as diabetic), and he wants to transition to herbal support. Or if someone is on cholesterol or heart meds that are causing side effects, and person wants to get off those and transition to herbs. How is best to do that? The MD is absolutely against any herbal use (they think it’s bunk and make less $). Thanks to all who reply!

StudentSimply, I would find another doctor. Â You won’t change their mindset, so why pay to be ignored? Â And every day you or loved ones can begin making choices with your food, exercise and lifestyle that will make the doctors less and less necessary. Â Best wishes in this process!

StudentIf you go to the Herbal Medicine making section and read the ulkus cruris thread, Doc Jones has a great explaination of why doctors must say no to herbal options.

Homestead InstructorThere really isn’t a universal answer for this. Sometimes medications really are the best tool and shouldn’t be eliminated, sometimes they can be and should be. If transition is a possibility, one needs to be careful, and in some cases professionally guided, in the transition as herbs really do interact with drugs…sometimes in a positive way, sometimes negatively.
The first step, I recommend is to do everything possible to get the body into a condition where it is healthier. Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and a number of other illnesses can often be decreased or eliminated by nutrition, weight loss, exercise, etc… The best scenario, if possible, is to not need meds or herbs.
Next is to find a doctor who is willing to be open minded about evaluating the real need for each medication. In many cases, things are over prescribed.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
