StudentHi, I’m a newbie here, but far from being a newbie at learning my herbs!! It’s the most therapeutic alone time I have. Driving down a road and catch your eye on a plant that you never seen, or its flowers are so beautiful, you dig it up to transplant at your wanna be herbal garden. Yes I’ve done it, most times not knowing what a treasure I transplanted til the next year. God always has a way guiding me to ones I’m gonna need. Identifying can be tricky, but that’s the amazing adventure we live.
So on one of my adventures bringing my willing husband to go with me, we come upon a plant like no others, a different green then the rest, leaves so cool. We keep walking but this plant keeps pulling me back to rub on it some more. I take pics of course. No internet service. So it will be a later research. As we drive home one is popped out in all the green paradise lit up as God was saying, don’t forget what you found, I am a beauty. I found the identification once at home. The great Teasel,Dipsacus fullonum. Search to see if its medicinal. Nothing coming up in my search, I almost gave up…… but this plant kept pulling me its way……. So in search I hit videos and there behold was a video of Dr. Jones talking about the teasel. It’s the first time I ever even heard of him. And thankful in so many ways that I did, { look at me, I’m his student now lol}. 😜.
Anyhow, back in 2004 I fell off a horse down hill, twisted my hips…. Long story short by 2009 I started feeling the signs of neuropathy. But not til 2011 did I finally have a doctor listen to me. My nerve was pinched for so long it now went crazy. Thru the years I have found many natural remedies to heal the inflammation for most part. But being a waitress, the nerve pain gets crazy. Here I was guided once again to a plant that was just right for me. In the mix of making some tincture, until then I am using Dr. Jones home made tincture. Day 4, I’m doing good but haven’t been working, tomorrow will be test day if its
So the moral of the story is look around, see what’s not only in your neck of the woods, notice those leaves waving you down to notice who they really are. Blessings are everywhere if you take the time to listen ….

StudentThank you for your post! I, too, have found Dr. Jones after studying much on my own, and boy, is my learning accelerating now that I listen to him almost daily! And what a blessing to now be able to take this herbalist course! I hope your course of treatment for your neuropathy works to your satisfaction and delight!
I use the iNaturalist app to help identify what I find, it’s not always 100% correct but it’s been great! I’ve found 591 plants over several years and find new ones frequently. I have started an herbal medicine garden and am trying top grow some of the ones Dr. Jones recommends.

StudentHi, to all! I’ve been ‘into’ alternative herbal health for nearly 40 years, and finally decided to dive into what I love, 7 months ago. I’m learning so much! It would be SO HELPFUL if we had a simple “Pictoral Index” of the medicinal herb plants that we learn about! So many times I see a ‘weed’ growing in my gardens/yard and wish I could scroll through an index to spot and ID the plant. Does anyone else feel that would be helpful?

StudentHi, I loved reading your post. I agree things just pop up when it’s the right time. One of my biggest issues is identifying the herbs as well. Everything gets lost after about the first 10. any ideas on how to remember the herbs and plants we discover?

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorLearning to really “listen” may be the most important skill a healer can develop. A number of the most important discoveries I’ve made or found in herbal medicine involved me being prompted or guided to plants or applications I knew nothing about. As we open our minds and hearts we’ll often be surprised at what wonderful things we can learn.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentThanks for your post! After hearing Doc Jones talk with Carolyn on Homesteading Family, I was intrigued. When I found his YouTube channel and watched all his posts, I knew I wanted to learn more. The teasel video was what made me want to take his course. Please keep us posted on your progress. Blessings to you!

StudentTopic AuthorThanks Kathleen, I like you have watched all his videos, so I was left with wanting more from him. So here I am lol. Teasel has helped me so much with my pain. And now have given to a few for other issues. Has tremendously helped them as well. Especially one who has lime disease. He has searched for it and says he is ready to harvest it for me in the fall. I showed him to identify it so he could make the tincture on his own. But as many I have encountered in the years, people really would rather buy it then make themselves.
anyways God speed ahead on our journey

StudentThis is such a beautiful post Kimberly. Thank you for sharing your story. I’m glad you landed here too!
In my own experience in discovering new plants, I find that Nature somehow knows what I need as I find new plants on my property each year. After doing research on them I find that statement to be true. It has happened too many times for me to question or doubt why they showed up for me. This year I have giant Mullein plants everywhere, where in past years there were none.
Best to you and your herbal adventures!
