Updated question…. I have a friend who would like to start taking turmeric for liver issues (Hepatitis from toxins). He is currently taking Amlodipine and Lisinopril for high blood pressure. Is it safe for him to consider turmeric?

Turmeric can enhance the blood pressure lowering effects of both of those meds, which can be a problem. It also inhibits the liver enzyme that gets rid of Amlodipine. As a result that med would stay around longer and the next dose could be cumulative with the last one that should have been gone by then. This can also lead to hypotension or could increase the likelihood of Amlodipine side effects.

Turmeric is mildly anti-coagulant as is Amlodipine so risk of bleeding may be a bit higher.

Lisinopril and turmeric together can lead to higher potassium levels which may also cause some problems.

Combining blood pressure herbs and blood pressure drugs requires careful monitoring. You’d really want to talk to your doctor and get him/her on board to make sure you’re monitoring things carefully and to make sure he/she doesn’t have other concerns based on other meds or personal medical history.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.
