StudentHello there, my mother in law has a bad leg. I recommended to her that she treats the wound with a marshmallow spray. The pharmacist was highly alarmed when she heard about my advice and did not want to give her the marshmallow. She was also advised against it in another drugstore. They said it was too risky to treat the wound with a homemade spray. I am a bit shocked and wonder if someone has experienced such recations in other parts of the world? It’s getting more and more difficult to get access to herbal remedies. FYI I live in Switzerland, Thanks for your answer

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorDoctors and pharmacists do their best. They are bound by a lot of insurance and liability issues the rest of us don’t face.
I was recently working with a young man (a relative) that had been poisoned by an massively incorrect dose of a liver toxic medication. His liver numbers were through the roof. The doctor said they were planning to ship him to the big city for a liver transplant if his numbers didn’t improve within 24 hours.
I told the doctor (a very nice guy) that I was going to give the young man some milk thistle seed. I told him I was a veterinarian and naturopath and that I knew enough pharmacology about the plant and the meds they were using that drug interference in either direction wouldn’t be an issue. The doctor said the he had to strongly recommend that herbs not be used. I told him very kindly and respectfully that I understood that he was under obligation to express that concern and that the concern was a matter of policy rather than one based on understanding of the herb. He agreed that was the case but that he still had to voice that concern. The young man took the milk thistle several times that night and in the morning his liver values were near normal and he was released from the hospital. The doctor was amazed at the result and said he was very happy with the outcome. But we both knew he’ll still be under the same obligation to object to herbs on the next case because that’s policy. Doctors aren’t in charge anymore. They’re part of a large corporate system that is ruled by policy and revenue rather than medical knowledge and and experience. It’s sad because the medical system is now missing out on the use of some great minds and great hearts that could be solving a lot more problems if their hands weren’t tied.
Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

StudentI wonder how many herbalists here have liability insurance? If so, is there an insurance company that specializes in herbal liability insurance? Thank you!
