Should I wash herbs before drying? I harvested some sagebrush today and did not want to have it mold?

You can wash them if you’d like, when you go through the process of drying them you just want to make sure that everything gets good airflow. Mold happens when moisture gets trapped and festers

Do people typically wash plants before drying?

What I do if I need to wash my herbs before drying, I rinse them in cold water to get the dust or bugs off the herb and then put it into my salad spinner to spin out all the excess water. Then I lay it out to dry on a drying screen. It works really good for me.

Yes, I do the salad spinner thing too.  I didn’t start off washing anything before processing but after I time I thought, well I ‘wash’ my vegetables, meaning I give them a rinse in cold water before I consume them so I guess I will do the same for plant matter that is being made into stuff.

I was hesitant with the resinous, really aromatic plants such as rosemary, calendula and gumweed but I figured they got a pretty good watering every time it rains and all I am doing is giving them a little swish, swish.

I do lay them out to dry and most of the time actually use a dehydrator set on very low, like 95 degrees. And I can tell you there is plenty of sticky left even after that treatment.

I unfortunately have had herbs get moldy because they did not dry long enough and that is disappointing, for sure.  I even have a jar of chamomile that I would bet has started to ferment just by the aroma of it!
