StudentI have just started so I don’t know if this is covered in the course, but how to rotate herbs over the years. I purchased a bunch of herbs in preparation for the cold/flu season and no one got sick. They are 2+ years old now. I plan on composting them but how to navigate this volume/usage, when to toss, when to keep, how much to have on hand, etc…
If in an apocalyptic situation and no prescription meds are available, what to use if you need a blood thinner? I had a situation where medical care was unavailable and the person have a DVT. We used nattokinase but would have much preferred a prescription. Alas the system is so broken it took weeks to get proper care.

StudentDepending on the age of the herb, you might be able to tincture them and extend the ‘use by date’ for a bit. I did that with some herbs that were nearing the expiration date and now the tinctures will be good for a few more years with proper storage. (They likely won’t last that long before the tinctures get used up.)

StudentI was thinking the same thing. Like do you use the same amount of over all herbs but divide it up? Do you keep the indidual herbs the same as you add stuff or is there a ratio?
My big question is at what point is adding an herb to a formula gonna make the ones you have less effective?
For example I have a Comfrey, calendula, plantain salve that has been absolutely magical. But I want to add arnica for pain be request but am hesitant to mess with whats working.
Just would love to have some of the ins and outs of the process explained.

StudentI definitely would be interested in how to create our own formulas! I often don’t have herbs recommended, so I omit and just use what I have, but are there other common substitutions I could make? How do I know if omitting an herb will make the combination less effective? All the questions! And if I have 5 herbs that do similar things, do I pick one or two? or combine a few?

StudentYES! Great idea! Since I began my schooling last year, I have started growing approximately 60 plus herbs. I am still buying from HGH instead of harvesting my own. I have ZERO confidence in harvesting for medicine without killing them. ALSO, I started taking herbs daily….. not sure if that’s alright. How long can I take certain herbs and do I need others for daily vitamins? ANY topic would be beneficial for me. I learn something new daily.

StudentI would appreciate learning more about harvesting, how much to take, ow much to leave, what time of the season to collect for most potency and why. I was collecting my ginkgo leaves when they were green, then heard that it is better to collect them when they start to turn. I always remember things better when you include the why. Why it is better to collect it in a certain season?

StudentHi Doc,
I read an article from USU: Sheep Select Diets To Control Parasites. It talks about how sheep will choose feed with tannins when their parasite load is high and as they even out, they will choose less tannins. So, do we trust our animals instincts and give them choices if the situation presents itself, go full science (parasite load count & not give choices) or is there something else you recommend?
I look at it like this: If the sheep has parasites, the dog has parasites (since she believes in rolling in and eating hors d’oeuvers freely given by the sheep)… which means I probably have them. If it’s the tannins they are after (like my grape plants) and we have them growing naturally on the ranch, do we allow them to self medicate, so to speak? My dog doesn’t count… she’ll eat anything. I mean farm animals more; are their instincts with our guidance a good start or do we just start and stay in charge?
During your time as a vet, did you ever correlate longer living dogs with owners who used more herbs or better food or did the ppl who fed junkie food have just as long lives in their animals? Did you ever notice a pattern?
Also, I’d really enjoy learning more about labour and delivery with herbs. Other than giving birth, I know nothing about the subject and it is very interesting.

StudentDiane, You asked: During your time as a vet, did you ever correlate longer living dogs with owners who used more herbs or better food or did the ppl who fed junkie food have just as long lives in their animals?
Diane, We acquired two different small terrier breeds late summer/early fall. They were on one of the cheapest grocery store dog foods prior to us obtaining them. We changed to a raw food diet (for the most part—one does not esp. like raw food) All this to say, it took 3 months or more to see a positive change in their coats. It should have only taken 8 weeks.
Recently, my husband bought some cheap treats for the dogs. One of the dogs turned “out of control” angry immediately after having them. It happened more then 4x !
Regarding an animals instinct: I am learning to trust animal instinct over my limited knowledge base. (in regards to the natural world NOT man made products)
Regarding parasite count: Learning how to count parasite load would be a good class. What kind of microscope to use would be nice to know. Years ago when we had goats I learned from an online goat person that Vet. techs were no longer trained to correctly test for parasite load, that one should learn how to do it themselves. I dont think it was that hard. I just never had the time nor skills nor knowledge to go down that path. Life is too busy as it is. But at this point, it would just be a good thing to know. Who knows where that would lead to!
Hope I didnt step on anyone’s toes.

- What herbs can you use if mama is having a cytokine storm?
- What herbs can you use for whooping cough for mamas and babies?
- What herbs should home birth mamas learn about for labor and delivery?
- Is jaundice in babies an automatic light treatment therapy in the hospital or are there at-home remedies that can be used?
- Are there herbs strong enough for postpartum pains? (I had to be on narcotics the last couple of times since it hurt too much to have baby on me and I was worried about not bonding properly unless some of that pain got thoroughly numbed.)

StudentPart of overcoming disease is removing the cause. Below is a very informative video on some causes of cataracts which is very shocking. May you be blessed.
Also, one drop of caster oil in the eye before bedtime will over time help dissolve cataracts. Drops of fresh lemon juice in the eye is also very productive; although it will sting for a few minutes but will subside quickly.

StudentI think it would be great to have a webinar on nutrition building. How, what, when? For all ages. It seems as though many issues could be helped or even resolved by way of getting to a proper nutrient, mineral, water level in the body. It would be so helpful to learn what foods, supplements, herbs to begin with, how to and how long, etc. and when, such as what ages need what & when, when it’s important to consider that there is a nutrient deficiency, and every day practice of keeping up your nutrients. Also, how chronic dehydration(which is so much more common than people realize) plays such a roll in health issues.
Appreciate you all, Natashia

StudentHi Doc!
I’m super excited for the webinar! I have a few questions that I would really like to have covered, if possible.
-I loved the When There Is No Doctor segment. Perhaps some additional tips on that topic. For example, the duct tape suture is brilliant! Can it be adapted for a deep cut on a finger, for example? Are there other injuries/illnesses that could be addressed, for example a dental emergency and there’s no dentist, etc?
-A few times when using an herb(s) for an injury or illness, I have wondered how long you give the herb(s) before either trying another herb(s), or deciding that perhaps the situation needs a pharmaceutical intervention? A couple days? Longer or shorter?
The other topics already mentioned sound great too! Looking forward to the webinar! Thank you!

StudentHi,
nice that you give a live student webinar. I’m looking forward to it!
Which herbs you shouldn’t use together with other herbs. In general so when used as powder, tea and/ or tincture. What are the signs of the herbs you shouldn’t mix together? Do you need to look to herb/ plantfamilies or do you need to have in mind that some herbs might have similar effects? You don’t want have an overload or that herbs interfere each other effectness.
Further I’m interested as well in if there are some herbs you can still use when you are pregnant and labour.
And some questions about animals but I need to do some better research first on your website if I can find those answers. So I come back later on.
Have a good day

StudentHi,
some other questions of me here below:
- in the veterinary lesson is written that wormwood and garlic are poisonous for cats and dogs. But in the parasite lesson you give only one recipe including garlic and wormwood as ingredients. So what can I give my cat and dogs?
- our regular veterinar told us to give the cat and dogs a few times a year a preventive cure against parasites. What do you think about that? And is there another way? May I give some herbs/ tincture instead?
- Further I have the same question for the horses. The veterinar said that we need to give the horses every year in the beginning of the winter a cure against cestoda and botfly larva oestridae. And in march – may against strongyle cyathostominae.
- And what can we give our chicken against parasites? Can you tell also something about the frequency?

StudentWow, this is a great opportunity for you to teach us how to substitute herbs in formulas. How to determine if the herbs will or won’t cancel each other out. If they will work together. How to know if the mix of herbs will or will not work for example (you have a great slide on mixing tinctures ie-tannins + alkaloids = elmer’s glue). How to take a formula for humans and substitute herbs that are okay for dogs into the formula. For example: The human formula Blood KLNZ has three herbs (garlic, mistletoe, and wormwood) that dogs can not have. So how would I go about subbing for these herbs so my dog can have this formula?
This would be a wonderful addition to everyone’s knowledge here in the school. There will always be a time when you don’t have all the herbs for a specific formula. The more we can learn the better off we all will be. As you have heard before knowledge is powerful! Thank you Doc!!!

StudentHi Doc!
I’m excited for whatever topic is chosen for the webinar! I have been taking my time chewing through the course and was wondering if basic herbal energetics would be too big of a topic to touch on? I know each historical practice has their own version of this topic so I’m probably opening a pretty big can of worms.
Maybe an easier way of looking at it is how to judge from several herbs of the same action is best for the job on a person by person basis?
Thanks!

StudentIf some of the questions above have been covered in the course somewhere (which I believe some have) Then perhaps locating them for people would be an idea so that there is less repetition going forward. For questions asked here that may not be in the course (or not detailed enough) Perhaps a question and answer webinar would work. I think the one question that I wonder about is: what formula’s not to mix with other formula’s. But, I think that the answer to that will come with time and experience on my part. I guess it is good to have a topic planned before hand in case people cant think of their questions right off.

Another thing I believe Doc has mentioned was possibly categorizing the herbs by their strongest to weakest actions. StudentSometimes one can be taking a lot of tinctures. Perhaps it was talked about somewhere in the course? But, when your taking many different tinctures . . . that adds up to a lot of alcohol. But more to the point . . . how does one take “many” tinctures at the same time or in one day? (for days) What should be the most that one can take in a given day? Some need to be taken often. But lets say its possible to be taking ten different tinctures in one day. I suppose you could take a different kind every hour? But, usually your suppose to eat something first. So, have something to eat every hour with given tincture? One way around it would be to use the dry powders instead of the tinctures. ie: powders plus honey (an electuary) Or all powders at the same time and down the hatch? (yikes)

StudentBecause of lyme, my husband and I for years have taken a resveratrol supplement made from Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) per info from Stephen Harrod Buhner’s book. Will this resveratrol work the same as from the herbs listed in the respiratory section to stop cytokine storms? Or is there something else in the herbs that is needed? If we take it pretty regularly, would it prevent a cytokine storm, even if we take the herbs that increase cytokines? Thanks!

StudentI would love to hear recommendations for menopause symptoms: insomnia, hot flashes and night sweats! I started having night sweats around age 51 and decided to take HRT because I was unable to sleep and function well at work. 9 years later I decided to stop spending $120-$150 monthly for HRT and go a more natural route. Unfortunately, I have not been very successful. I went off HRT about 2 ½ years ago and intense hot flashes and night sweats returned. I’ve worked with several herbalists and naturopaths and have tried many combinations of herbs and supplements to eliminate symptoms. Black cohosh at about 28 grams daily worked for a few weeks before symptoms returned. Last summer was the most intense so far having 10-15 hot flashes/night sweats daily. Keeping the house at 60 degrees this winter (burr!) has reduced episodes to 6-8 daily. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I cannot be the only one! Thank you!!

StudentThere are so many great questions I would be greatful to have answers to! My one contribution is this;
During the Principles of Herbal Therapy lesson, you mention finding a mentor that really knows herbalism and pharmaceuticals – how do we go about finding that person?
Thank you – am really enjoying learning through this course!

If in an apocalyptic situation and no prescription meds are available, what to use if you need a blood thinner? I had a situation where medical care was unavailable and the person have a DVT. We used nattokinase but would have much preferred a prescription. Alas the system is so broken it took weeks to get proper care.
I would like to what could be use long term for high blood pressure and high cholesterol since I read that berberine is not a good long term choice.

Toward the bottom of the lessons list is a category called Live Webinars. That’s where it’s hiding.
