I am thinking about trying my hand at tinctures, but I am not sure where to buy everclear (what was suggested at the expo by Doc). As I have never drank before my knowledge of alcohol is very limited lol can I just go to the liquor store and they have it? And if I can’t find it what other alcohol can I use?

Homestead InstructorMost herbs can be tinctured in vodka. If you have an herb that needs a higher %, you can buy Everclear in Nevada or online from
these guys. Im not sure if Utah sells Everclear. They might.

I just want to try it I havent decided what to try. I have lots of yarrow, Mullen, some chamomile and hope to get more. I read that it is sold here but I can try vodka too. My boys get ear infections all the time and I heard a mullen and garlic oil or tincture can help but I wasnt sure which to do. How long would it need to sit before I could use that combo?

Homestead InstructorChamomille likes about 65% alcohol but I always just do it in vodka with good results. All the others would do great with vodka.
To make the Mullein flower ear medicine, pick the flowers and cover them in a jar with olive, almond or sesame oil and put them on the window sill. In two weeks strain and use.
OR, take 1 part (by weight) herb. Add 1/2 part vodka (by volume) and allow herbs to soak a few hours. Then throw everything into a blender with 7 parts oil. Blend until the sides of the blender start to warm up a little. Strain and use.
3 oz herb soaked in 1.5 ounces ethanol and added to 21 oz oil will be just about right for the typical blender.
Another great (and easier) solution for ear aches is to use onion juice. Just grind up an onion and strain the juice through a handkerchief or some such and put a few drops in the ear. I have 15 kids and nary a one has ever gone to a doctor for an ear ache. The onion juice works every time. Presumably (and reportedly) garlic juice or a garlic oil will do the same. I’ve never tried garlic or mullein for ears. I always use the onion juice. I’m going to make some Mullein oil myself and give it a try…never know when there might not be an onion around.

The person who told me about the mullen/garlic said they would just rub it on the inside of the ear but not in the canal sorry if that doesn’t make since. I tried the onion drops once on my oldest but he freaked out and I couldn’t get it in, maybe I just need to try it again. I probably will try both just to see how it works! Thanks for all the help!

Homestead InstructorHmmm…that’s odd. I’ve been squirtin’ onion juice into my kids’ ears for over twenty years. Never had anybody comment much less freak out. As long as you strain it, it’s fine to put in the ears. Of course nothing should go into an ear if the ear drum is ruptured.

I know in PA you can’t buy Everclear in the state store, BUT the LCB will grant you a permit to buy it from the state and the local state store will handle it for you. As long as you have a valid non-drinking reason you should have no issues. Your state may vary.

In Utah you can buy Everclear at the state owned and run stores but it is kept behind the counter and you have to ask for it. It is sold in pints only.
