I need HELP!  My youngest adult son has battled low iron for 2 years.  When discovered, his H/H was 5!!!!  Been through every test, every doctor, several infusions and bags of blood every month, and a $1500/ month med with insurance.  Blood test came back this week and his iron is at 26 AGAIN!!  I need all of you to first, pray for Sean, and second, tell me how to fix him with what God has given us!

From a heart sick mama in NC!

Hello Angie, I will add your son to my daily prayers. While Spinach has been noted to have good iron quantities, it is hard for your body to access it. I’m told a citrus dressing will help break it down for absorption. Here is a list of herbs to help you while you wait for a more educated and experienced response from Doc…. and note that excessive amounts of any one of these (except nettles and maybe burdock) would not be good either as some are also diuretic, antibacterial, etc.

          • Parsley:  high in iron and ability to support iron absorption
          • Dandelion: leaves contain high levels of iron and help the body to absorb it
          • Stinging Nettle: is tasty and is a good source of iron
          • Burdock Root: very rich in iron and a herbal blood purifier
          • Yellow Dock Root: high in iron and used to treat anemia and other blood-related issues
          • Sarsaparilla: all species are highly rich in iron and other nutrients

            Hi Angie,

You might want to also consider nutrient levels. Iron absorption is also dependent on B Vitamins. I’ve seen several clients that had Vit B deficiencies that resulted in low Iron.  Nutritional yeast and kombucha are wonderful ways to add B vitamins, and eating liver regularly would be an excellent food source.
