I have some questions about herbalism during the childbearing years but would also love to learn as much as I can. I am not a midwife, but I have been either pregnant and/or nursing for the most of the last 5 years. It’s been a wilder ride than most women experience, and to be honest, we could probably make a case study on it…

Will there be additional classes about herbalism during the childbearing years posted in the course material? I’d like a broader knowledge on the topic, but I also have some specific questions. Part of it is also wanting to make sense of all the difficulties I have had in the past and trying to prepare for a better future.

My wife LoriAnn is a naturopath and midwife. She recently retired and she and I will be doing some more things on this topic very soon.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

I’m currently nursing my third and planning on future babies.  I look forward to some reliable information on herbal safety in nursing and pregnancy!  I find lots of herbs say “don’t take while breastfeeding”.  Some of them it is due to actually damaging effects, some due to lack of research, and some it is simply because they will dry up milk supply.  I cannot seem to find reliable ways to figure out which herbs belong to which category!  Having an 11-month old and an oversupply of milk, I would be fine with potentially losing some supply.  But NOT fine with taking something that could hurt my baby.  I’m excited about learning more about this topic as I continue through the course and as you continue to release new content!

Hi Kelly, you’ll want to check out Doc’s herb list here

Pregnancy & Lactation Safety of Herbs

Also, I put together a spreadsheet that has a list of all the herbs Doc talks about with their pregnancy and lactation safety which you can find over in the Medicinal Herbs subforum

Yes, Thank you so much! I have saved your spreadsheet as it is really helpful! I am trying to find out for different herbs the WHY of their safety (or un-safety) during lactation.  In Doc Jones’ list, green tea, parsley, oregano, purslane, red clover, sage, and others are listed as not safe.  But obviously I eat a lot of those so I assume some must be just considered not safe at medicinal levels.  Or perhaps is parsley lactation safe but that it dries up milk?  Then I’ve seen red clover as an ingredient in prenatal/postnatal teas.

That’s where a lot of my questions come up.  I try to be really safe with my precious children, and I am especially careful during pregnancy.  For lactation, I want to know what herbs to steer clear from (barberry – potential for brain damage), and which may not actually be dangerous (peppermint – listed as safe but can dry up milk supply, ashwagandha – not listed as safe but was recommended by a midwife for postpartum depression during lactation).  Can you see why I’m still left with questions? Is there hope!?

Heh yeah I don’t blame you, it really is confusing sometimes! My wife gave birth to our son this year and so it’s something I’ve looked into as well. Our midwives said that if it’s in a tea, it probably isn’t concentrated enough to make a huge difference, as long as you only are drinking it maybe once a day or so. If you are drinking it like, 5 times a day, then yeah it’s going to effect you. Honestly, stress is probably worse for you than most of the things in the teas. Also, they mentioned to us that essential oils can have a much stronger effect than the teas since they are more concentrated and you are putting them directly on the skin. One more thing as to those herbs you mentioned, Doc has said that using them in a culinary sense (sage, paresely, oregano, etc.) is fine. I believe he talked about this in the video Your Thanksgiving Meal is Medicinal if you want to hear a bit more about it. Hope this helps!

Oooh that would be amazing! I would love to learn more about this also! I had some questions during pregnancy about certain herbs and I found it was really hard to find good info on!

I am also very interested in this! I am the mother of 13 children, and have been pregnant or nursing most of my married life. I would really love more information on which herbs are most beneficial in the childbearing years. Thank you, Megan for asking this question. Thank you Doc Jones and LoriAnn for being willing to teach us more about this!

My daughters both got married in the past year and my first grandbaby is on the way.  I would love to learn more on this topic to help them in their pregnancies.
