Thank You so much for the workshop you had this last weekend. It was very informative and really accesible information for an amateur herbalist.
As I was driving back home from the workshop I got a call that my Great-grandmother had gallstones, and pancreitis. What would you suggest for such a condition?
Thank You again for your help and generosity.

Dr. Patrick Jones
Homestead InstructorHi Cait,
Glad you ejoyed the workshop.
Dandelion leaf is a wonderful protective for the pancreas and minimizes damage during pancreatitis episodes.
For Gallstones…
Peppermint will relieve the mild spasms of the bile duct
Gentian will decrease GB inflammation
Milk thistle and Turmeric will both inhibit formation of new stones and crystals in the bile.
I’ve heard that milkweed root is very soothing to a painful gallbladder but have never used it that way…Michael Moore talks about it in Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West.

Doc Jones,
At your seminar last weekend you mentioned an herb you take when you noticed a rib has gone out. I didn’t write that one down, could you tell me what it is?
Also, another question: I am training for a marathon right now. I’ve found that if I run in the afternoon I have a harder time controlling my bladder. Is there an herb that will strengthen my bladder after having kids?
Thanks!

When my rib goes out I use either Lobelia or crampbark to relax the muscles so it will pop back in. Both are good anti-spasmodics. The one I mentioned at the workshop was Lobelia.
If I were a woman, I’d be drinking Raspberry leaf tea every day. It’s a great tonic for the entire female uro-genital system.

You discussed red raspberry leaf for women’s health. What is recommended for a man who has prostate issues. Specifically has a difficult time fully emptying his bladder? The urine doesn’t stream but comes out in spurts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Saw palmetto is quite good for prostate troubles as is nettle root.
It’s also important to get lots of beta carotene (orange vegetables) and lycopene (tomatoes) in the diet. They help a lot.

Hi Dr. Jones,
The class was AMAZING!!! Everybody should attend at least once. I’m ready for round two!
This thread was started on gallstones. Is there anything that you are aware of that will dissolve gallstones, especially since sometimes they are too large to pass through the bile duct.
I love your article on Max the dog who had kidney stones. Does the gravel root or parsley root do anything to dissolve gallstones?
Dr. Jones, thank you, so much, for the example and setting for all of us!
Warmest regards,
Todd

Both of the herbs that you mention are good for the condition of concern. Juniper is also an herb that will help with dissolving stones. Drinking lots of pure apple juice will help soften them as well. It is the malic acid that is the active ingredient responsible for this. I would have to do some more digging but I think I have read recently in a permies.com thread about some other things that help.

Homestead InstructorMichael Tierra recommends the following formula for dissolving gallstones and says he has good luck.
It’s very similar to the formula I use for kidney stones. Good to know it works for gallstones as well. APparently rocks are rocks.
3 pts Gravel Root
1 pt Parsely root
1 pt Dandelion root
1 pt marshmallow root
1 pt turmeric
1/2 pt ginger
1/2 pt licorice

Having mentioned juniper berries above I thought I should pass along this little bit that we have learned recently:
Green berries are for external use only.
Blue (fully ripe) berries can be used for internal uses.
