StudentI’m from Alaska living in a Zone 3B climate. I’ve started a small herb garden and am interested in hearing from others who have had success with herbs in this climate. What herbs have you successfully grown, are they easy-to-grow, herbs with special requirements, and such.

StudentI’m in zone 3 in Alberta. Â We had our first frost last night this year. Â Herbs that want to take over the world here include yarrow, valerian, greater celandine, pineapple weed, fireweed, horsetail, tall lungwort (martens paniculate), stinging nettles, wild mint, skullcap (scutellaria galericulata), etc. Â A great resource for northern herbs is “Boreal Herbal” by Beverley Gray. Â I’ve had good success with herbs like bee balm, bergamot, Echinacea, calendula, etc.

StudentI’m in Great Falls, Montana and find Yarrow in fields in our mountains and last year I grew Calendula from seed. I found Pineapple weed in my garden as well as purslain. The Nasturtium did ok, but the two plant I had only had about 10 blooms all year long. Lemon balm stayed little and heal-all did well. I was able to harvest marshmallow seeds from my marshmallow plant that I started from seed. This is my first year trying to grow these things, so I am not sure if this is helpful. I believe we are between zone 3 and 4 here.

StudentHi, I’m in Québec zone 3-4. I like your question. I will continue reading the answers you receive. For the moment, everything I’ve tried grows well except camomille (!?). Marshmallow, yarrow, nettle, comfrey, calendula, … A lot of plants grow wild : fireweed, st-johns wort, milkweed….. I’ve ordered need seeds to try next spring. We’ll see…..

StudentWhere do you buy your seeds from? My Comfrey and Calendula are just finally starting to die off after multiple nights of frost (which was really surprising to me)

StudentMy favourite herb seed & plant source is Richter’s herbs in Ontario. Â Besides having a really good selection and helpful write-ups, they have the best packing system I have ever seed. Â Our mail person can’t read and invariably sets the box down in full sun upside down, and its rare to lose more than a tsp of soil.
