Hey Doc, in the early Learning the Lingo module it says that Licorice is a cathartic.  At HGH under the product Licorice it says it’s an aperient.  Please clarify which it is for me.  How strong of a laxative is it? And if it is very strong, would you combine it with another herb (an astringent or what?) to counter the laxative effects?

It’s actually both. The terms aperient and cathartic aren’t terms relating to intensity (though cathartics/purgatives do tend to be more intense than aperients). Cathartics are direct stimulants to gut muscle activity. Aperients either bulk the stool with fiber and increase water retention in the stool (again, usually with fiber).

Licorice does both. It’s not a super powerful cathartic but its combined effect of gut muscle stimulation and fiber content (it’s a root remember) can be beneficial for constipation. THere’s no need to counteract those benefits if you’re using it in a formula. It isn’t strong enough to be disturbing in a formula. If you took it as a simple its bowel effects would be more noticable but even then it won’t be anything like cascara sagrada or the other intense cathartics/purgatives.

Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

Does licorice root still have fiber when in glycerine tincture form?

Nope. Fiber never gets through the straining cloth.
