        <span style=”font-family: Arial, sans-serif;”>Do you know of a place I can learn about plants that have tannin versus alkaloids as applies to herbalism? Which plants are tannic and which are alkaloid?</span>

          Hi Steven,

          Take a look at slide 24 of “Principles of Herbal Therapy,” under General Herbalism. It has a list of several herbs in each of those categories.

            For more details, you might want to consider getting Herbal Constituents by Lisa Ganora.  It is a little heavy on organic chemistry, but definitely a worthy read.

              In general, if something is a good astringent, it’s going to be high in tannins.

              Don't use herbs or combine herbs with medications or use them during lactation or pregnancy without talking with your healthcare provider.

                  I think I will try a bit of glycerin to see if that works.

                      Seems like James Green in his Herbal Medicine Maker’s Handbook said something about glycerin making tannins and alkaloids play nice together in tinctures.

                      Went to Green’s Medicine Maker Handbook per Patrick’s suggestion.

                      Significant finding on page 98 on tannins.

                      Additional information on page 186.
